Music In Our Schools
Winter Program - Dec. 1

November 22, 2009
Sometimes students, and maybe parents, forget that school is about learning—not fun.
The 7-12 band is trying some different music for the Winter Program. One song is really three short classical works—“Death and the Maiden” by Schubert, “Sarabande” by Handel and “Bourree” by Bach. All three songs are in a minor key. Usually the key of the song sets the mood of the song. Major keys are happy. Minor keys are sad. The first two songs are also slow, so many of the students dislike them. However, part of education, even in music, is to expand a person’s knowledge and experience. So, despite the grumbling, we are performing these three works. The total piece is under 4 minutes.
We are also performing a different type of march. Not Sousa, not Karl King, but the “Mickey Mouse March” to the original show. Students are learning to read music in 6/8 time. Again, this is a new experience for most. Come to the Winter Concert on December 1 at 7:30 pm for your new experiences.
