NEWS FROM THE SPANISH DEPARTMENT

by Jenell Hughes

April 05, 2009

The school year is quickly coming to a close and the students in Spanish have all learned a lot this year.

Spanish I completed reading a novel all in Spanish.  The book was about pirates in the Caribbean area during the 17th century.

This week, Spanish I students in one class are learning about the Quinceañera.  This is the celebration of the 15th birthday of Hispanic girls.  It commemorates their transition from childhood into adulthood and can be quite elaborate.  The other Spanish I class learned about this a couple of weeks ago.  They have also been creating stories about themselves and their interests to explore and use new vocabulary.

The Spanish II classes also completed a novel completely in Spanish.  It was about a family that went of a cruise to visit Mayan ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

The Spanish II classes are now doing a travel unit.   They are traveling to Spain virtually.  They are finding out some of the things that have to be taken care of when traveling abroad and vocabulary to use in the process.  They are also working on a site that gives them a little taste of Spain and they get to interact with it as if they were actually there.  They seem to be enjoying that quite a bit.

During Easter Week, the classes learned about how the Spanish celebrate Easter in Spain.  They watched some parades and saw pictures of their celebrations.  They also made some cascarones which are a Hispanic tradition.  Cascarones are eggs that are cleaned out and decorated and then filled with confetti.  People go around and crack the cascarones over other people’s heads.  The students took their cascarones outside to crack them over each others heads.  They had fun doing it.

The following students from Miltonvale are taking Spanish classes this year.  Angela Fowler, Feodora Gebhardt, Lea Kuhlman, Jeremy Pepple, John Pepple, Janae Perkins, Catherine Wallace and are taking Spanish II.  Kylee Cyr, Cody Denio, Travis Dennis, Trevor Dennis, Justus Golightly, Steven Mahin, Brady Martin, Shelby Schultz and Kyle Todd are taking Spanish I.
