Warriors Compete at State, Do Well

by Rick Hatfield

May 24, 2011

Grady Brayton and Kyle DeMars competed at the State Sand Greens Golf Tournament at Yates Center on Monday morning.  Both played well and represented Glasco and Southern Cloud well.  Grady shot an 81 to take the 9th place medal on the day and Kyle shot 105.  His place was not available at press time.  It started out like a day that was going to be filled with rain, but the clouds began to fade and the golfers were able to play under good conditions throughout the rest of the day.

Grady placed 20th in last years State Tournament and shot a 96, so this was a 11 place improvement and a 15 stroke improvement from last year.  This was Kyle's first trip to state and he shot a 48 on the front nine, before having trouble on Number 1 the second time around.

"I was really proud of how hard the guys worked at their game.  Grady had a 43 front nine and improved to a 38 back nine.  I think he really started getting comfortable with the course as the day wore on.  To be in the top ten at the State Tournament is quite an achievement for Grady who is a Sophomore.  Kyle did well too, he just had that one really bad hole that really hurt his score.  Still, I was really proud of his effort.  It is a big deal just to get to state and play with the best players in the state.  I think for a Senior, it is really important to finish your career at state.  I appreciate the fact that Kyle stuck it out and finished his career on a positive note.

Our goal in the future is to add some new players to blend in with our older players and hopefully get a team or two to state."  Quoted Warrior Coach Rick Hatfield.

Jake Morrison of Yates Center won the event with a 70.  The team totals were as follows:

Rock Hills - 318
Riley County - 326
Yates Center - 329
Tipton - 334
Sylvan - Lucas - 335
LaCrosse - 342

Warrior Golf Notes:  Coach Hatfield and the Warrior team would like to thank all of the golfers of Glasco and Miltonvale for all the kindness and help they have shown the Southern Cloud team this year, it has been of great help, also he would like to thank Yates Center for the nice tournament they provided on Monday, it took a lot of hard work by a lot of people, it is appreciated.  Lastly, the Warrior team and Coach Hatfield would like to thank Mr. Perkins, Mrs. Wallace, Mr Blochlinger, the teachers and staffs of Miltonvale and Glasco High Schools for all their help with Southern Cloud Golf.  It couldn't happen without all of you!
