Miltonvale Grade School Celebrates Kansas Day
Students & Staff Celebrate 150th Birthday
February 25, 2011
Miltonvale Grade School students had a fun time celebrating Kansas’s 150th birthday on Friday, January 28. Students met in the multi-purpose room in the morning to see a cake made by Mrs. Wurtz that depicted the state flag.

One hundred fifty candles were lit and the students sang Happy Birthday to Kansas. Each student received a piece of the cake for lunch.

Students were put into mixed groups in the afternoon and then went from room to room to do some Kansas Day activities. Mrs. Sanders showed them and let them play with some toys and games from pioneer days.

Mrs. Drake and Mrs. Wurtz had them make a 3-dimensional Kansas flag using a variety of items such as pretzels to make the log cabin.

Mrs. Wespe talked to the students about cowboys and afterward they went outside to practice roping a plastic steer.

Mrs. Reedy informed the students about wheat grown in Kansas and then they ground up some wheat to make flour.

Mrs. Bloom had the students make butter from cream and they got to sample some on a biscuit.

Curtis Swenson brought some old tools and showed them how they built log cabins. He also brought some flint and steel and showed them how they used this to start fires.
