Cool and Welch Tie for 11th at State

May 22, 2023

(Leonardville)  Levi Cool and Trenton Welch tied for 11th at the State Sand Greens Tournament played this year at the Golf Course at Leonardville.  Both players got off to a slow start, but then had nice runs to get back in metal contention only to fall 1 place short.  Just a shot here or a putt there would have given one or both of the Southern Cloud players that coveted state metal.

“I was really proud of the way our guys fought out there today.  It was kind of a grind it out type of round for both of them, real for all the golfers, but they kept their heads in it and just kept trying to get pars on the scorecard.  It was a really nice day out here this time, temperature in the high 70’s and not much breeze, but Leonardville’s rough is real deep and it is really hard to find a ball in it, and if you do, it is really hard to get a club on the ball to hit it out of that stuff!  Trenton lost a ball on the very last hole, which for him was the 228 yard par 3 second hole, and took a 6.  Just an old fashioned bogey would probably have gotten him close to a medal. Still our guys competed well with the best golfers of our class and did a really good job.” quoted Warrior Coach Rick Hatfield

Lakeside had one of the greatest years in Sand Greens Golf History and won the event with a 299 (they were undefeated in team play this year), St. John was 2nd with a 324, and Tipton was 3rd with a 367.  Jace Cunningham of Lakeside won the individual championship with a 3 over 71, Tarin Winkel shot 6 over 74 for 2nd, and Luke Bates of St. John’s shot 12 over 80 for 3rd place.

This concludes golf for this year.  Hopefully we get a few more kids to come out next year.  It would be fun to compete in the team competition as well as the individual competition.
