WARRIORS START SUB STATE AT BURRTON
The Warriors received the number 1 seed this year at the Burrton Sub State Tournament. The Warriors had a first round bye. Due to the bye, the Warriors had not played a game in the 10 days before they played in Burrton.
The Warriors were the 1st seed going into the tournament and they drew the winner of the 4th seeded St. Xavier Rams vs 5th seed Peabody-Burns Warriors. The game between the Rams and Warriors was won by Junction City St. Xavier 50-48.
The Warriors took on the Junction City St. Xavier Rams at Burrton on March 3, 2023. After the layoff, the Warriors were anxious to play. The Warriors came out and had a good 19-7 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Warriors keep up the hard work on defense, holding the Rams to 2 points. The Warriors outscoring the Rams 9-2 to take a commanding lead 28-9 at halftime. The Warriors had a hard time getting started in the third quarter being outscored by 2 points, 18-16. The score was 44-27 going into the fourth quarter. The final quarter was similar, as well as the first three. The Warriors outscored the Rams 15-12 in the final quarter, giving the Warriors a win in the second round of the Burrton Sub State, therefore, giving them another game for the sub state championship against either 2nd seed Hutchinson Central Christian or the 3rd seed Centre-Lost Springs.
Leading the way for the Blue and Silver was Sophomore Kye Chase with18, followed closely by Junior Gus Rice and Sophomore Trenton Welch with 15 & 12 each. Senior Levi Cool added 6 points, while Senior Bryson Schmidt and Junior Dante Peterson had 4 points each. Freshman Logan Haley had a hard time finding the basket for the Warriors. The Warriors were lead in rebounding by Kye with 17, and Bryson and Trenton grabbing 10 rebounds each. Levi had 7 assists, Trenton and Dante had 3 assists each. The Warriors turned the ball over 16 times.
WARRIORS HEADED TO STATE BASKETBALL
The Southern Cloud Warriors will be making the first ever trip to the KSHSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament. The Kansas State High School Class 1A Division II Tournament will be held at Barton County Community College in Great Bend.
The Warrior earned the trip to State by defeating the Hutchinson Central Christian Cougars.
On Saturday, March 4, the Warriors made their way back to Burrton to play the Central Christian Cougars. The Warriors started out the game a little shaky, trailing after the first quarter 9-6. The second quarter, the Warriors decided to start playing, trailing by only 27-21. The Warriors came out after the half time speech and decided it was time to get started. The Warriors played great defense in the third quarter, holding the Cougars to 4 points. The Warriors scored 13 points to take a 3 point lead going into the final period, 34-31. In the final quarter each team scored more points, but the Warriors scored more, 19-13, giving the Southern Cloud Warriors the Sub State Championship 53-44.
This was an outstanding game for the Warriors as they made a great comeback. Leading the way was Senior Levi Cool with a season high 27 points, and Sophomore Trenton Welch with 14 points. Senior Bryson Schmidt added 5 more. Junior Dante Peterson and Sophomore Kye Chase had 4 points each. Trent was the Warriors top rebounder with 9 boards, followed by Kye and Bryson with 8 & 5 rebounds. Levi and Bryson had 4 & 2 assists, respectively.
