Music in Our Schools
Band to perform at Spring Program
by Kathy Urban
March 08, 2010
March is Music In Our Schools month. Music class is much more than just music. There is math with counting (beats), subtraction (rests) and fractions (subdividing the beats).
The lyrics of songs provide opportunities for English lessons on vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. History/geography lessons are ample, too. And I like to take the chance to introduce new types of fine arts—dance, opera, art.
The Glasco Grade School band students are improving weekly on playing ability. Learning an instrument requires some new thinking, finger coordination, and a lot of patient practice. The last is probably the hardest for this age group. They want to be perfect now. Most of the students have increased their ranges, tone quality, finger dexterity and working as a group. Plan to attend the Spring Program on April 29th to hear the 5th & 6th grade band.

6th grade band members: Jocelyn Clements, Joclyn Ham, Raemon Flores, Levi Richardson, Dakota Mason, Austin Pelkey, Eli Heller (missing Heidi Pudge)

5th grade band members: Hailey Schenk, Rayna Schmidt, Michael Burd, Sara Cox, Brianna Smith, Mandi LeMay, Whitney Ehlers, Ruby Arnold, Kris Burch, Austin Waite, Ethan Studt, Karl-HeinzTyler, Drew Michaelson (missing Sarah Stein)
The Glasco section of the Southern Cloud 7th & 8th grades band is preparing for the end of the year concert and Junior High contest. The contest is May 6 at Courtland. All of the students are working on solo pieces. This individual work allows me to work one-on-one with each students; shows problem areas that need help; showcases great ability; and builds confidence. Not all students will take the solo to contest. Those that do are rated I, II, III and critiqued on playing ability. The spring concert is May 11 in Miltonvale. All band students, as well as choir students, take part in this final concert of the year. We hope you will be able to attend to support the musicians.
7th & 8th band students: Molly Schmidt, Jacy Martin, Matthew Snively, Trey Bellows, Dakota Cooper, Garrett Redden, Jacob Clements, Jared Knox, Morgan Cool, Shiloh Studt, Kyle Bur
