Mr. Hatfield and His Students are off to a Great and Unusual Start!

by Rick Hatfield

October 17, 2019

This has been an unusual start to the school year for Mr. Hatfield and his students.  Mr. Hatfield/Coach Hatfield has changed jobs.  He is no longer doing any of the counseling; he is now the Title 1 teacher in the mornings at the Elementary School and is still the Junior High Social Studies teacher at the High School in the afternoon.

“The good news is that I get to see most of the elementary kids each day and I have really enjoyed being with them.  I had taught Title 1 before so it was a little easier to fit in then it would have been. “ Said Mr. Hatfield.  One of the programs I am really enjoying is called “Fast Forward.”  It is basically a phonics and reading program.  On the Miltonvale side of the district we use it in 2nd grade.  Right now I have Jacob Clairmont, Mason Williams, and Alex Allen in the program and they are all improving and doing a great job!  We had a little trouble getting the technology running early in the year, but with Mr. Lobaugh’s help, we are up and running.

Mr. Hatfield has also been in all the other classrooms doing a variety of jobs.  “I really like the variety of things I have done.  One day it might be Math, the next phonics, the day after that something else,” added Hatfield.

In the Junior High, they have added a new Geography book to the inventory in 7th grade.  It is really nice, and has updated information in it.  The 8th grade is in Kansas History and is learning about our great state.  We have changed a lot since the days of the Indians and the pioneers!  We will be in Civics later in the year.

The Junior High is closing out football season this week and will soon be getting ready for basketball season,  Coach Hatfield (Boys) and Coach King (Girls) are looking forward to a great year! Mr. Zeltwanger (our new Counselor) will be helping with basketball as well.  He has the hard job, putting up with me and Coach King!

The 7th graders this year are Kye Chase, Juliette Meadows, and DeShawn Peterson.  The 8th graders are Teia Fowler, Ethan Kennedy, Marissa Millikan, Dante Peterson, Georgia Rolph, and Wyatt Sulanka.  We had to say goodbye to Alex and Olivia Herron, as they moved.  We will miss them!
