Cloud County Spelling Bee

Glasco Hosts 2012 Bee

by Laurie Cool

February 07, 2012

Glasco Grade School hosted the 2012 Cloud County Spelling Bee.  Twenty four spellers participated in the county's competition with the hope of moving on to the state spelling bee to be held in Topeka, Kansas.

The following students represented Glasco Grade School:  5th grader-- Violet Belt; 7th graders-- Ruby Arnold, Whitney Ehlers, Mandi LeMay and Rayna Schmidt; 8th grader-- Austin Pelkey.

Local resident, Marlene Grittman, a top speller herself, was the orator for the bee.

After a written test of 25 words, the top eight spellers were chosen for an oral bee to decide the champion and co-champion of the county.  With a tie after the written test, 11 spellers advanced to the oral portion of the competition.  Three of the eleven were from Glasco.  Violet, Rayna and Ruby were given the chance to show off their spelling expertise.  Excitement and nerves took over, and Violet was eliminated in the first round with a word that she says seems to be haunting her now; she reads it often in the books she spends her spare time reading.  Rayna and Ruby also ended the competition earlier than they anticipated, not surviving until the final round.

Fortunately, each of the girls who made it to the final round, along with the others (with the exception of Austin Pelkey) have a chance to compete again next year when the county bee will be held in Miltonvale.

CONGRATULATIONS to Glasco's top spellers!!!!
